Does any of this sound familiar?

  • Do you have difficulty falling or staying asleep? And the resulting tiredness and irritability are taking a toll on your personal and professional life…
  • Do you find it difficult to concentrate or feel disinterested in things you once enjoyed? And your ability to study, work, and enjoy hobbies is suffering as a result…
  • Are you often overwhelmed by feelings of dread, excessive worry, or fear? And these uncomfortable feelings are preventing you from enjoying your life…
  • Do you suffer from anxiety caused by unresolved trauma that affects your relationships? And you’re afraid this will prevent you from forming or maintaining personal connections with others…
  • Have you been diagnosed with OCD, a panic disorder, or other anxiety disorder? And you’re not sure where to start when it comes to coping with it effectively…
  • Have you tried therapy for anxiety before but didn’t find it helpful? And you’re afraid that no therapist would understand your cultural background and how it contributes to your anxiety…

If you found yourself saying “yes” to any of the above, you’re not alone. Anxiety can range from being moderately unpleasant to downright debilitating. No matter what your personal experience of anxiety is, you don’t have to go through it in isolation. Working with a therapist who is familiar with your cultural context can be a powerful way to cope with anxiety and improve your quality of life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Anxiety is a normal reaction to stressful events and can even be helpful in some situations by triggering your body to pay attention and react to potential danger. Unfortunately, anxiety can become a problem when it manifests as frequent and excessive fear or worry that impacts your quality of life.

People experience anxiety differently and it includes both physical and mental symptoms. Physical symptoms of anxiety may include tense muscles, restlessness, headaches, light-headedness or dizziness, a rapid heartbeat, fast breathing, sweating, nausea, changes in sex drive, and grinding your teeth.

Psychological anxiety symptoms include a sense of fear or dread, inability to relax, constantly worrying about the future, feeling depressed, overthinking situations, dwelling on bad experiences, feeling disconnected from your body, and a fear of losing touch with reality.

Anxiety feels different for everyone, so you may experience any combination of these (and other) symptoms. The severity of the symptoms will also vary, with some people experiencing occasional intense anxiety, and others feeling it constantly.

Anxiety treatments include lifestyle changes, therapy, and in some cases, medication. Therapy for anxiety can be very helpful. A trained professional can work with you to empower you with proven tools and strategies that help you become aware of and manage symptoms of anxiety. It’s important to find a therapist you feel comfortable with and who understands your cultural context. That’s why we offer a free consultation with the therapist of your choice to learn about your specific needs and determine if it would be a good fit. You may consult with as many therapists as you like to ensure you are paired with someone who can best provide you with the support you need.

Generalized anxiety disorder, phobias, panic disorder, separation anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, medication-induced anxiety disorder, and agoraphobia are all types of anxiety disorders. However, you do not necessarily need to be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder to seek therapy for anxiety in Ontario. Anxiety therapy can help anyone who experiences the types of symptoms described above.

Therapy can help you learn how to cope with anxiety regardless of whether you have an anxiety diagnosis or not. If you are experiencing anxiety frequently or excessively and it is disrupting your daily routine, in addition to seeking therapy for anxiety, you may want to reach out to your primary health provider who will be able to refer you to a psychologist or psychiatrist for a diagnosis.

Several physical and environmental factors may contribute to anxiety. These include stressful or traumatic life events, drug use, family history of anxiety disorders, and certain medical conditions. Anxiety can be due to any combination of these and other factors, and it may not be easy to pinpoint the exact cause. Luckily, you can still manage the symptoms!

Everyone experiences anxiety differently. Similarly, people may benefit from different types of therapy modalities. Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) is considered to be one of the most effective treatments for anxiety, by helping you recognize how your thoughts contribute to your anxiety. You can then begin to intentionally change these thought patterns to reduce the likelihood and intensity of your anxiety symptoms.

Other anxiety therapy modalities may help you work on mindfulness, acceptance, and tolerance of uncertainty, and other strategies to help reduce your anxiety. Our team has expertise in a variety of therapy modalities that can help you cope with anxiety.

At Ontario Mental Health Therapy, we provide online therapy for anxiety and other issues to residents of Ontario. That means you can get the anxiety treatment you need from the comfort of your own space on a schedule that’s convenient for you.
